The short answer
Sell or give away anything in good shape, use the city's free bulky-item pickup if your building has six or fewer units and you can get the piece to the curb, and book a carry-out for the rest. Flat prices start with a dresser at $126, a sofa at $126 and a small dining table at $103, with a $100 minimum order.
Start with what is worth something
Providence has a lot of old furniture that is actually good furniture. Solid wood dressers, china hutches and dining sets come out of long-held houses on the East Side, in Cranston's Edgewood and in Warwick's older villages every week. Some of it is worth selling.
Price it to move and describe the stairs honestly. A buyer who shows up with a hatchback and finds a solid oak armoire on a third floor will leave without it. Photograph it in good light, measure it, and say whether it comes apart.
Timing helps. Late August, when students and new staff arrive at Brown, RISD, Providence College and Johnson & Wales, is the best window to sell a desk, a bookcase or a small table. Mid-May, when everyone leaves at once, is the worst, because the market floods with the same items.
Give it away
If selling is not worth the effort, offering a piece for free usually works for anything clean and sturdy. Neighbors on a triple-decker street often know someone who needs a table. Online free listings move quickly in student areas like Fox Point and the blocks around Providence College.
Set a deadline for yourself. Free listings attract people who say they will come Saturday and do not. If the piece has not gone in three or four days, stop waiting and move to another option, especially if a lease end is approaching.
Some local charities accept furniture donations, but policies on pickup, condition and items accepted vary and change. Call before you haul anything anywhere. When JunkRabbit removes furniture, we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them.
Use the free city pickup when it fits
The City of Providence offers free bulky-item pickup for furniture and large appliances through Waste Management. It applies to buildings with six or fewer units. You schedule at least 24 hours before your trash day, and the item goes out no earlier than the night before.
This is the right answer for a single sofa or a table at a single-family or small multi-family where you can carry it to the curb yourself. It costs nothing, and the city is set up for exactly that.
It is not the right answer if the furniture is upstairs and you have no help, if your building has seven or more units, if the item is a mattress, which the program excludes, or if you need it gone before your next trash day. Old houses, old furniture
Furniture from older Providence homes has two common complications. The first is weight. A solid hardwood dresser or a one-piece glass-front hutch is far heavier than anything flat-pack, and it is often in a room at the top of narrow stairs.
The second is that pieces sometimes came into the house before a stair was rebuilt or a wall went in. They may have to leave through a different door, or come apart. A crew that does this every day will know which hutches separate at the cornice and which dressers lose their mirror first.
Basements add a third problem. New England homes nearly all have one, and that is where decades of extra chairs, a spare bed and the old kitchen table end up. Carrying them up a steep basement stair is its own job.
Flat prices for common furniture
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Dresser — Large, Solid Hardwood (60 in+) | $182 |
| Chest of Drawers | $126 |
| Cabinet / China Hutch | $160 |
| Armoire — Large / Double (Solid Wood) | $197 |
| Dining Table (2-4 Seat) | $103 |
| Dining Table (6-8 Seat) | $163 |
| Dining Chair | $45 |
| Bookshelf | $72 |
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
A dining table for six with four chairs is $163 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 = $343. A china hutch and a large hardwood dresser are $160 + $182 = $342. Carry-out from any floor is included and there is no stairs fee.
When a whole room has to go
If you are clearing more than a handful of pieces, a truck-fill tier is often simpler than counting items. A quarter truck, about 4 cubic yards, is $241. Half a truck, about 8 cubic yards, is $431. A full truck, about 16 cubic yards, is $732.
A typical furnished bedroom, with a bed, dresser, nightstand and some boxes, often lands around a quarter truck. A full dining room and living room together is closer to half. The quote is based on your photos, so you see the number before you book.
Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM, seven days a week. For pricing every item one by one, see the Providence junk removal price list.
