The short answer
Rent a truck if you have two strong people, a full day, a place to park the truck by your door, and items that a disposal site will accept. Book junk removal if the items are upstairs or in a basement, you have mattresses or electronics with their own rules, or you need it done in a couple of hours. Flat prices: sofa $126, queen mattress $103, quarter truck $241, full truck $732.
What the DIY day actually involves
The DIY route looks simple: rent a truck, load it, drive to the dump, unload, return the truck. In Providence, each step has a catch.
- Pick up the truck and drive it back through city traffic.
- Find somewhere to park it near your door. On College Hill, Federal Hill or Fox Point, that may be the hardest part of the day.
- Load it by carrying everything down the stairs. In a triple-decker, that means the narrow rear stairs, again and again.
- Drive to a disposal site. The state's landfill is the RIRRC Central Landfill at 65 Shun Pike in Johnston. Check its residential rules, accepted items and hours first.
- Unload it at the site.
- Return the truck, with fuel and mileage, before the rental window ends.
That is a full day for two people, and it assumes nothing goes wrong.
Where the costs hide
A truck rental has a base rate, a mileage charge and fuel. There may be disposal charges at the site depending on what you bring. You need a dolly, straps and furniture pads, which you may need to rent or buy. And you need a helper, which usually means someone giving up their Saturday.
Then there is the risk. Carrying a sofa or a refrigerator down triple-decker stairs without experience is how walls get gouged, railings crack and backs get hurt. If you rent, that risk is yours.
Add it up honestly before deciding. For a few items, the total is often close to or above a flat-price pickup, before you count your time.
One Saturday, two ways
Picture a second-floor apartment in a Mount Pleasant two-family. The list is a sofa, a queen mattress and box spring, a dresser, a 42 to 65 inch TV and six bags of odds and ends.
The rental route. Pick up the truck in the morning and circle the block for a spot. Carry everything down the stairs, which takes two people most of an hour with a mattress and a dresser in the mix. Drive to Johnston and unload what the site accepts. The TV cannot go in with the trash, so it waits for an e-waste appointment or an RIRRC event. Return the truck in the afternoon. That is most of a day for two people, plus the rental, fuel and any site charges.
The pickup route. Photograph the rooms, book a two-hour window, and the crew carries everything out. As items, that is a sofa, a mattress set, a dresser, a TV and six bags; at that volume the quote will usually land on a quarter truck at $241 or a 3/8 truck at $338, whichever fits. Either way, one visit, nothing left for later, and the rest of the Saturday is yours.
The items you cannot just drive to the dump
Some of the most common junk in Providence has its own route under state and city rules:
- Mattresses. Providence takes them at the DPW drop-off on Allens Avenue on Saturdays from 7:00 to 12:45, two per visit with a Providence ID. Rhode Island's Bye Bye Mattress program supports drop-off statewide.
- TVs, monitors and laptops. Rhode Island bans e-waste from the trash. Providence offers a free e-waste pickup by appointment, and RIRRC runs collection events.
- Refrigerators and ACs. Refrigerant has to be recovered under federal rules before scrapping.
- Chemicals. Household hazardous waste goes to RIRRC's Eco-Depot events.
A DIY truck full of mixed junk may need several stops. A pickup handles all of it in one visit: mattresses and electronics are on the price list, and paint is accepted.
Flat prices for comparison
| Item or load | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Mattress + Box Spring Set | $143 |
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Refrigerator (Standard) | $164 |
| TV (42 in to 65 in) | $68 |
| 1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards) | $241 |
| 1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards) | $431 |
| Full truck (~16 cubic yards) | $732 |
A sofa, a queen set and a dresser from a second floor are $126 + $143 + $126 = $395, carried out with no stairs fee and no trip to Johnston.
When renting a truck does make sense
DIY is a good choice in some cases. If you are already renting a truck to move, and the junk is a few boxes and a broken chair, adding a stop at a disposal site on the way can be sensible. If you have a big garage cleanout in Cranston or Warwick, a driveway to park the truck in, and two friends, the math can work for a large pile of plain household junk.
It also works if you own a pickup truck and the items are light. In that case, the city's free bulky pickup may be even better, if your building has six or fewer units.
Outside Rhode Island, check first. Disposal options in Fall River, New Bedford, Attleboro and the Connecticut Quiet Corner towns are set locally, and many rely on town transfer stations with their own rules. The point is to compare the full cost, not just the rental rate.
Booking a pickup instead
Upload a photo or pick items online and you see the price before booking. Choose a two-hour arrival window, seven days a week from 8am to midnight. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM.
The crew carries items out from anywhere in the home, loads, hauls and handles disposal. You do not need to park a truck, find a helper or drive to Johnston. For the dumpster comparison, see junk removal vs dumpster rental in Providence.
