The short answer

Pick a hauler that gives you a firm price before booking, includes carry-out from any floor, is insured and can send your building a certificate of insurance, and handles mattresses and electronics properly under Rhode Island's rules. Check that they actually serve your town. At JunkRabbit, the price is shown before booking, a sofa is $126, and there is no stairs fee.

1. Is the price fixed before you book?

Ask whether the number you are given is the total or a starting point. Some quotes are estimates that are finalized when the crew sees the job. Others are firm. Both models exist across the industry, and the difference matters most when you are working to a budget.

A firm price lets you plan. If you are a tenant leaving College Hill at the end of May, or a landlord turning over three units in Elmwood, you need to know the cost before you commit, not after the truck is loaded.

Ask what would make the price change. A good answer is specific: only if you add items, or the job is materially different from the photos, and only with your approval. JunkRabbit prices from a photo or an item list, and the price only changes if you approve it.

2. Does the price include the stairs?

In Providence, this question matters more than almost anywhere. Much of the housing is triple-deckers, mostly built between 1870 and 1920, with one apartment per floor and narrow rear stairs that turn at porch landings. Washers, dryers and water heaters are in basements. A price that assumes the item is at the curb is not a price for most Providence jobs.

Ask directly: does the price include carrying it from the third floor, or up from the basement? Is there a stairs fee, a walk-up fee or a heavy-item surcharge? Does the crew take apart furniture that will not clear a turn?

At JunkRabbit, crews carry items out from anywhere in the home, any floor, and there is no stairs fee. A sofa from a third floor is $126, the same as from the ground.

3. Are they insured, and can they send a COI?

Moving heavy items through old buildings carries real risk: a scraped stair rail, a dented plaster wall, a cracked window, an injury on a steep basement stair. Hire a hauler that is insured, so that if something goes wrong, the cost does not land on you or your landlord.

Larger buildings, condo associations and managed properties often require a certificate of insurance before any company can work on site. That includes many Downtown buildings and converted mills in Olneyville, the West End and Pawtucket. Ask how quickly the hauler can send one, because a COI that takes days can push back a move.

JunkRabbit works with vetted, insured local haulers and emails a COI to your building within one hour of booking.

4. Do they handle mattresses and electronics properly?

Rhode Island has specific rules for two of the most common junk items. Mattresses are recycled through the statewide Bye Bye Mattress program, and Providence's free bulky pickup excludes them. E-waste, including TVs, monitors and laptops, is banned from the trash under state law.

Ask any hauler what happens to these items after pickup. A clear, specific answer is a good sign. A shrug is not. We recycle whatever we can, and we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them.

5. Can they come when you need them?

Ask about scheduling: how soon, what hours, and how narrow the arrival window is. A hauler who can only offer a wide window on a weekday may not work for a move-out with a fixed key handover, or for a landlord fitting a turnover between showings.

JunkRabbit crews work seven days a week from 8am to midnight. You choose a two-hour arrival window, and same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM, with no same-day surcharge.

6. Do they serve your town?

The Providence area covers three states in a small space. If you live in Fall River, New Bedford, Attleboro, Seekonk or Taunton in Massachusetts, or Killingly or Putnam in Connecticut, check that the hauler actually serves your address, not just the general region. The same goes for island and coastal jobs in Newport, Jamestown and the East Bay.

JunkRabbit Providence serves most of Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts and northeastern Connecticut's Quiet Corner, at the same flat prices everywhere.

7 and 8. Booking and the fine print

  • Can you book without a phone call? Online booking with an instant price from photos saves time and gives you the quote in writing.
  • Is disposal included? Ask whether there are dump fees on top. JunkRabbit's prices include disposal.
  • What is the minimum? Ours is $100. A single small item, like a TV at $68, bills at the minimum.
  • Can landlords set up an account? Property managers can set up an account covering several properties.
  • What about hazardous items? Paint is accepted. Other hazardous waste is handled case by case, so ask.
