The short answer
Providence's free bulky-item pickup through Waste Management includes refrigerators, for buildings with six or fewer units, scheduled 24 hours before your trash day. If the fridge is upstairs, your building is larger, or you cannot wait, a flat-price pickup is $164 for a standard refrigerator, $183 for a side-by-side or French-door, $238 for a built-in and $115 for a mini fridge, carried out from any floor.
Using the free city pickup
The City of Providence lists refrigerators among the large appliances its bulky-item program takes at no extra fee. The steps:
- Confirm your building has six or fewer units.
- Schedule with Waste Management online or by phone, at least 24 hours before your regular trash day.
- Get the fridge to the curb no earlier than the night before.
Before it goes out, empty it completely and clean it. A refrigerator with food in it attracts animals overnight and will not be pleasant for anyone who handles it. Tape the doors shut or remove them; an unattended fridge with a working latch is a known hazard for children.
That last step, getting it to the curb, is the hard part. A standard refrigerator weighs a few hundred pounds and is tall, top-heavy and awkward. You need an appliance dolly and at least one helper.
Why fridges are hard in Providence homes
The typical Providence kitchen is not on the ground floor. In a triple-decker, two of every three kitchens are upstairs, and the rear stairs that serve them are narrow, steep and turn at a porch landing. Getting a refrigerator down that route takes a strap dolly, two people and patience at every turn.
Many older houses on the East Side and in Federal Hill also have kitchens that were remodeled around the current fridge. Cabinets or a doorway trim may need the doors removed before the fridge can come out. French-door and side-by-side models are often wider than an old kitchen doorway with the doors on.
Basement fridges are common too, especially the old second refrigerator that has lived next to the furnace for twenty years. A steep New England basement stair is one of the hardest carries there is.
The refrigerant part
Refrigerators contain refrigerant, and federal rules require it to be recovered before the appliance is scrapped. That is a big part of why a fridge is handled differently from a dresser, and why you should not cut lines or drain anything yourself.
Do not try to strip the fridge for scrap at home. Damaging the sealed system releases the refrigerant and can make the appliance harder to recycle properly.
If you have a chest freezer or an upright freezer, the same applies. A chest freezer is $146 and an upright freezer $149 as flat-price pickups. A dehumidifier, which also contains refrigerant, is $77. Disposal is included in each price.
Flat prices for refrigerators and cold appliances
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator (Standard) | $164 |
| Refrigerator (Side-by-Side / French Door) | $183 |
| Refrigerator — Built-in / Sub-Zero | $238 |
| Mini Fridge | $115 |
| Freezer (Chest) | $146 |
| Freezer (Upright) | $149 |
| Wine Cooler (Large / Floor) | $156 |
| Ice Maker | $115 |
A kitchen remodel that pulls a fridge and a gas range is $164 + $137 = $301. A basement fridge plus a chest freezer is $164 + $146 = $310. Carry-out from any floor is included, and there is no stairs fee.
Mini fridges and move-out season
Every May, mini fridges come out of off-campus apartments on College Hill, in Fox Point, near Providence College in Elmhurst and around Johnson & Wales Downtown. They are small enough that people assume they can go out with the trash. They cannot go in a regular trash bin, and they contain refrigerant like any other fridge.
A mini fridge is $115 as a flat-price pickup. Pair it with a futon at $111 and the total is $115 + $111 = $226. If you are in a building with seven or more units, the city's bulky pickup is not available, so a private pickup is the normal route.

Before the crew arrives
Empty the fridge and freezer, and give it a day to defrost with the doors propped open and towels underneath. Unplug it. If there is a water line for an ice maker, shut the valve; if you are not sure how, have a plumber disconnect it first.
Clear the route: move the kitchen table, take down anything hanging in the stairwell, and note any tight turns when you book. Snap a photo of the fridge for the instant quote, and you see the price before booking. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM, seven days a week.
